BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Baton Rouge is starting to get a rep in the world of extreme sports thanks to the efforts by groups such as BREC as well as local businesses and enthusiasts. This weekend another mile stone for will be reached in the Capital City.
“This tour stop is going to be great for our city,” Reno Broussard, owner of Urban 9 skate shop, said. “It will bring people into town, so that will help out economically.”
Broussard is talking about RAT (Regional Amateur Tour), which is hosting its first ever stop in Louisiana.
“Before now it’s mainly been hosted in Dallas, Austin, Houston – Baton Rouge is actually the furthest spot comparable to the other cities included in the tour,” Broussard noted. “The fact that this is the first city to be included outside of Texas – that’s a really big deal.”
The competition will be held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, March 24. Amateurs will get the chance to show off their best moves. Although a winner will be crowned at the end of the day, the competition doesn’t end there, and that’s the reason why Baton Rouge could see many competitors from all over Texas heading here to participate.
“The whole tour is set up on a point system,” Broussard said. “You even get points just for signing up at each tour stop location, which is an incentive for people to go to each city. By the end of the tour, the person with the most cumulative points will win the overall title.”
Broussard says there are still slots open for those looking to participate. All the events will begin at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, which is when most of those slots are expected to fill up.
“I think a lot of people are waiting to sign up until they see who else has registered,” Broussard said with a laugh. “Handling contest pressure and stress is a whole different thing. I like to tell skaters to just go have a good run and have a fun time.”
