Glen Oaks Player Collapses During Game, Dies

By Chris Mycoskie

Glen Oaks basketball player Shannon Veal collapsed and died during the Lady Panthers' second round playoff game vs. Helen Cox High School Monday night in Baton Rouge.

With 1:34 remaining in the 2nd quarter, Veal was at the free throw line. After making her second shot, head coach Harold Boudreaux says Veal turned to him, asking to be taken out of the game.

Boudreaux says he turned around to find a sub and by the time he had turned back towads the court, Veal had collapsed.

Veal was a diabetic. Her mom, sitting courtside, came straight to her, acting fairly calm, assuming her daughter's sugar was low. But Veal was unresponsive.

Paramedics arrived in less than five minutes.

Veal was the district's most valuable player and was being heavily recruited by LSU, who had sent coaches to this game.

Shannon Veal was 17 years old.

As of 8:45 pm Monday, friends have started posting memorial messages on her Bebo social networking webpage.

The game resumed at 6 pm Tuesday at Glen Oaks. The Lady Panthers claimed a 67-40 victory over the Lady Cougars. With the win, Glen Oaks advanced to the state quarterfinal round, where they'll have a home game against LaGrange Thursday night.
