SU band raising money to travel
Southern University's marching band is traveling this weekend, but not with the football team. They are hitting the road to raise money, hoping to earn enough green to get back on the bus with the Jag's blue and gold for the rest of the football season.
The band's travel budget was eliminated because of budget cuts. Now the band is rallying back. The "Human Jukebox" leaves Saturday for Jackson Mississippi to compete in the 10th annual Southeast Regional Battle of the Bands. The gig pays $10,000 and the event's promoter is picking up the tab for all of the band's traveling expenses. Southern's Student Government is also pitching in.
Lawrence Jackson, Director of Bands said, "I just cannot say enough about Dimitrius Sumner and the SGA. They made a presentation last Thursday to the Southern University Marching Band and me in the amount of $13,700 to cover the travel expenses for the Jackson State game, which is going to be in Jackson Mississippi on October 16th. So I'm excited about that and again, students helping students."
The band has also received $6,500 in donations from alumni and the public. They need more than $40,000 to travel to the remaining three away games this football season.
Donations can be mailed to the school at:
