BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) – More than 300 Southern University students, faculty and staff took part in this afternoon’s “Save our Southern” rally on the historically black university's campus .

Speakers at the rally included Southern University System President Ronald Mason and student government President Demetrius Sumner. They focused on the possible merger of the University of New Orleans with Southern University. Sumner says he and other Southern University students are opposed to the idea, “We are not going to allow any entity who does not understand the purpose of historically black institutions within our state to shut us down and to drive away critical access to opportunity to those students. It’s not gonna happen.”

Those that attended the event were entertained by the Southern University band.
