OAKDALE, La (NBC33) – Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards will be released soon from federal prison. His daughter Anna Edwards confirmed the long standing rumor this morning, Monday, Jan. 3.
The 83-year-old, four-term governor was locked up back in October 2002 after being convicted in a bribery and extortion scheme to rig the riverboat casino licensing process.
In a statement released this morning, his daughter, Anna, says, “My family is looking forward to the New Year and our father being released from Oakdale Federal Prison in January, when he will go to a Federal Halfway House.
“During his six months of Halfway House, he will be subject to the rules and regulations for the Bureau of Prisons,” she added.
Edwards was convicted on 17 counts of bribery and corruption and was originally scheduled for release in June.
