EBR School Board notifies employees of possible RIF
BATON ROUGE, La —
At its regular meeting tonight, March 15, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board approved notifying all school district employees by letter that a reduction in force (RIF) might be necessary in the future. No layoff plans have been determined by the Board at this time, and Board members will continue to review proposals for the School System’s 2012-2013 fiscal year budget.
This is a required administrative procedure necessary in the first phase of a RIF if it becomes necessary. It states a RIF may become necessary if budget cuts cannot be accommodated through attrition and reassignments to cover the necessary reduction in expenditures. A similar measure was taken by the Board last year. The district will begin mailing approximately 6,250 employees a letter each on Friday, March 16, about the possibility of a RIF in the future. These will be general letters. By state law, the School System must give an employee 30 days before laying them off under a RIF.
The district should have a better idea of the budget needs in April, when the revised 2011-2012 budget is scheduled to be presented to the School Board. The fiscal year begins July 1
