'Thinspiration' didn't start on tumblr. It has been round for a very long time and tumblr was only founded in 2007. A lot of people who look at the sites have already developed eating disorders and are used to comparing themselves to other slim/thin/skinny people around them, others think they can get an eating disorder to lose weight fast if they try to join in on these websites. The latter may encourage this as a lifestyle - they likely have emotional issues too - but sufferers rarely try to.
