The recently issued flash flood watch for our viewing area has Ascension Parish's pump operators racing against the clock.

For days they've been trying to clear out a massive pile of junk that has been clogging up the system.

Flood waters from earlier this week were pumped off the city streets, along with people's trash.

City officials say the accumulation is posing a serious threat to the area because not only is the mess preventing water from pushing through, its creating the type of congestion that could potentially shut down a pump.

"If something happens to the barrier that keeps the debris out, or if it breaks, then trash can get into the pump. If that were to happen it could stop our pumps" says Bill Roux Ascension's Director of Drainage.

Roux says if one of the five pumps were to give out, close to half of the parish could flood.
