BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — More animals than ever are in need of a good home in Baton Rouge. Friends of the Animals BR is a non-profit volunteer organization that tries to help take furry friends out of the pound and in the arms of a loving family.
The group works with shelters, providing supplies and helping to adopt out the dogs and cats. They say, this summer they're seeing more pets than ever that have been given up by their owners.
"Alot of people, owners surrendering,” Paula Schoen, President of Friends of the Animals BR, explained. “It might be the economy, but they don't realize a lot of times when they surrender their dogs to Animal Control, they assume we can adopt them out, but a lot of the animals are not saved that are owner surrendered."
No matter the odds, Friends of the Animals works tirelessly to find homes. This weekend, the group will be holding pet adoptions at the LSU Lakes and downtown at the Farmers Market.
In order to continue their work, Friends of the Animals BR needs your help with much needed funding. On June 21, 2011, they will hold a silent auction fundraiser at The Roux House. Among the items to be auctioned are two tickets provided by Vision Airlines. Schoen says there are plenty of other great items that were donated by local businesses, hotels and restaurants.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance at The Roux House.
