Tuscon, AZ (NBC) — The man accused of gunning down six people and trying to assassinate Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in Arizona made a court appearance today. However, he had an outburst, forcing the judge to make a quick decision.
Today, Jared Loughner appeared in federal court for a mental competency hearing.
He sat quietly for 45 minutes, then yelled, "Thank you for the freak show. She died in front of me," in reference to Congresswoman Giffords.
Guards escorted him from court. Moments later the judge declared Loughner mentally incompetent to stand trial, for now.
The judge had to ask himself two questions: Does Jared Loughner understand the 49 charges against him, and can he participate in his defense?
Court documents filed by 2 different psychiatrists who evaluated Loughner indicate the answer to both those questions is a resounding "no".
While the course of justice is altered for now, shooting victim Suzi Hileman's life has been altered forever. Hileman brought the youngest victims, Christina Taylor Green, to that fateful congress on your corner event.
Hileman believes ultimately justice will be served.
Loughner will be evaluated again in four months.
