BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — Local law enforcement officers spent the day carrying a flame for a special group of people. They carried the Flame of Hope all the way to Hammond Friday. That’s in honor of the 2011 Special Olympics Louisiana State Summer Games.
The torch was lit on the steps of the capitol. The Special Olympics kick off in Hammond tonight.
“This gives our athletes social activities, as well as training, competition, a lot of aspects that they would normally otherwise not get to participate in,” says Renee Starret with the Louisiana Special Olympics.
This is the 30th annual Torch Run. Over 2,000 officers carried the flame throughout Louisiana this year.
