BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — NBC33 has received reports that the river could shut down between Baton Rouge and the mouth of the Mississippi as early as Sunday.
The report shows that Captain Ed Stanton with the Port of New Orleans is tentatively looking at shutting down the river between Baton Rouge and Boothville at the Mile 18 market in Plaquemines parish.
The US Coast Guard would make that call. We talked to the Coast Guard today. They say shutting down the river is not an option right now, but the people that work on the river are very concerned about it. If the river were to shut down, large ships and barges would not be allowed to navigate that stretch of river until the levels go down.
