LAFAYETTE, La — Sophomore Jordan Hymel pitched a season-high 5.2 innings on the mound while Josh Cryer hit a clutch bases-clearing double to help Southeastern Louisiana defeat in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, on a blustery Tuesday evening at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Jonathan Pace went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI while Jason Greenleaf pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing no hits and fanning four, in earning his first career save for Southeastern (27-15).
Southeastern broke up a scoreless game in the third inning after Britt Gautreaux led off with a walk, moved to second a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Fisher and scored two batters later when Pace hit an RBI single to right. Cass Hargis, who earlier reached on a single before moving moved to third on Pace’s hit, scored when Justin Boudreaux hit a sacrifice fly to right.
ULL (23-19) cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Poirrier before Southeastern put the game away in the fifth.
Fisher reached on a one-out single off ULL starter Ryland Parker (1-1) before Hargis drew a walk and Pace followed with an RBI single. After Boudreaux was walked to load the bases, Cajun reliever Matt Hicks got Jeff Harkensee to pop up in foul territory for the second out before Cryer lined a pitch that landed just inside the third-base line and rolled into the corner to give the Lions a 6-1 lead.
Hymel (4-2), who previously tossed a season-best 5.1 innings in a win over ULL on March 9, fanned a season-best five batters while allowing four hits with one walk. Mike Petello hit a pair of wind-aided triples for the Cajuns, who could muster just one run off the southpaw until Lance Marvel tripled past a diving Hargis in center field that drove in Poirrier.
Southeastern, which claimed its seventh straight victory over its in-state rival, collected eight hits in the game with Boudreaux joining Pace with two hits. Hargis scored twice for the Lions, who swept the season-series for the third straight year and won its third straight against the Cajuns in Lafayette.
Petello and Marvel each went 2-for-4 for ULL with the rest of the lineup going a combined 0-for-21. Parker, the first of four pitchers used by the Cajuns, went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to UNO in a 6 p.m. contest at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net .
