As Gustav unleashed its fury on the Baton Rouge area, Berthelot was just a few months into the St. Christophers alcohol rehabilitation program.
Like every other building in town--the rehab facility lost power-- but instead suffering through the storms aftermath-- berthelot and the other 25 men in the program loaded onto two buses and headed up to mt. Petit jean in arkansas.
"it was like the storm was following us.. Horrible weather all the way up there"
That's when the attempt to escape Gustav almost ended in disaster.. "it was really scary"
The bus that berthelot was riding in almost lost control. Berthelot says even though he had put his body through terrible things-- this was the closest to death he's ever been.
A completely sober man today Berthelot says he and his friends may be the only ones celebrating the one year anniversary of Gustav.
"I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that hung out with family members.. Ive always bonded with family during hurricanes. Its not about the material things that got destroyed its about the experiences I believe"
