ST. HELENA, La (LSP) -- Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a five vehicle fatality crash on LA 16 approximately one mile west of LA 63 in St. Helena Parish.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 1991 Freightliner 18 wheeler, driven by Jeffery Johnese, 30, of Baton Rouge, was traveling east on LA 16 below the posted speed limit due to heavy fog in the area.
As the 18 wheeler proceeded eastbound, it was rear ended by 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Glenn Hughes, 22, of Denham Springs, LA, traveling at a high rate of speed on LA 16. Immediately following the initial rear end impact between the Freightliner 18 wheeler and Chevrolet pickup, three separate vehicles traveling eastbound on LA 16 became involved in the collision upon approaching the crash scene. The vehicles include a 2010 Dodge SUV, a 1994 Peterbuilt 18 wheeler, and a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix.
After the initial crash, all three vehicles braked sharply and swerved around the Chevrolet pickup resulting in several additional collisions between all five vehicles. LA 16 remained closed in both directions for approximately three hours while investigators cleared the crash scene.
Hughes and front seat passenger, Cory O’Daniel, 24, of Denham Springs, LA, were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with serious injuries. Upon arrival at the hospital, O’Daniel was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Johnese and the driver of the Dodge SUV, Cynthia McClintock, 57, of Baton Rouge, were transported to Hood Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Peterbuilt 18 wheeler, Brittany Steinhauer, 24, of Folsom, and driver of the Pontiac Grand Prix, Alberta Tillis, 28, of Greensburg, were wearing seatbelts and received no injuries in the crash.
Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash with blood samples from each driver pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
