BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) Good news for former governor Edwin Edwards. He's been offered a job and he'll take it.
While Edwin Edwards is under home confinement, he'll be able to leave the house for several reasons. He can leave to attend church, to go shopping, to seek medical attention, and now, to do his new job. The former governor now works for the Sweet Lake Land and Oil Company based out of Lake Charles.
Jim Brown has known Edwards for years. He says the 83-year-old will be working on projects here in Baton Rouge, dealing primarily with oil leases.
"He's had an extensive background with oil and gas," says Brown. "So the fact that he can deal with oil leases and look at oil and gas issues, I think it's going to be helpful for him."
Edwards' employer is actually a good friend. Claude "Buddy" Leach runs the oil company where Edwards will be working. He's also the chairman of the state's Democratic Party. He and Edwards have known each other for quite some time.
"I think it's wonderful that Mr. Leach would offer Govenor Edwards a job. I think there's a lot of people who would do the same thing, quite frankly," says Brown.
However, Leach also chose Edwards for the job because he's qualified. "I think Buddy Leach, in a very smart way, has said this guy's got talent. I'm going to use this talent and put it to work on my business."
It's a step in the right direction for the former governor of Louisiana. "Edwin Edwards is a very active guy, and as a consequence, I think he's giong to enjoy doing the job and being involved with the public," says Brown.
Brown says he expects Edwards to do well for the company. He'll employed there at least for the next six months.
