BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) – The Downtown Development District met this morning to recap the status of massive building projects on the slate for 2011. Additions like new housing and a town square are just some features you can look forward to in the New Year.
The big talking point for the day was the nearly completed Hotel Indigo, which is set to open on February 17. Once known as the King Hotel, its completion marks a big step towards bringing back the hub of the Capital City.
“2011 is kicking off to be just a great year for us,” David Rhorer, Executive Director for the Downtown Development District, said to NBC33 News at the close of the meeting. “We’re ready to take a little first hand tour of the Hotel Indigo.”
John Schneider, Chairman of the Vision City Development Group, had an emotional reaction when discussing the future projects. For him, this is the true beginning for a project that began years ago. He’s looking forward to seeing all of the improvements to the downtown area.
“Within two years, I think you’re going to see a very vibrant, 24/7 downtown area,” he said.
Schneider explained that the hotel projects are especially critical for improving tourism in the area. Once the area reaches 1100 rooms, the city will be better suited for courting large conventions. That, he says, will directly translate into more dollars in the hands of local business owners.
