A blast killed one and injured three men working on an oil pipeline in St. James Parish. It happened on Marathon Petroleum Facility in Vacherie, right next to Louisiana Offshore Oil Port Plant.
The trouble started with a flash fire that broke out when crews were working on a pipeline. Shortly before noon, police say a crude oil pipe had been shut down for repairs. When the crew began welding on that pipe, the fumes ignited and caused an explosion. The name of the man killed is not being released at this time. Three other people were transported to Baton Rouge and are being treated for burns.
State Troopers say there was no fire after that initial blast and want to stress there is no threat to the public. We’ll continue to track this story.
