NEW ORLEANS (NBC33) — U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan sentenced former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin to 10 years on Wednesday. Nagin is also ordered to pay $84,000 in restitution.
Nagin could have been sentenced up to 20 years for his convictions.
The judge says Nagin will serve time in a minimum security prison in Oakdale, LA, to be close to family, according to WDSU in New Orleans. He is to report on September 8, 2014.
Nagin was convicted of federal corruption charges on February 12, 2014, after a two week trial. He was found guilty of 20 of the 21 counts of bribery, money laundering, fraud and filing false tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
