POINT COUPEE, La (WVLA) -- An 18-wheeler hauling sugar cane pulled out in front of a train near Point Coupee Parish and caused it to derail.
An official with the Louisiana State Police says it happened just after 11 a.m. when the truck failed to yield to the oncoming train. The driver did sustain minor injuries, but he is expected to recover.
Witnesses say the train saw the truck on the track and blew its alert horn several times. The truck, however, did not move and remained parked on the tracks. They say it seemed as if he was trying to get hit.
Two engine and three box cars were derailed. Officials say the damage to the track is extensive. The area will be closed for several days. Although a rural location with little traffic, oncoming vehicles will be rerouted around LA 415.
We will have more on this accident on NBC33 News at 5 p.m.
The driver of the 18-wheeler has been cited for failure to yield to a train.
