HENDERSON, LA (NBC33) — Dancing. Some would call it an american pastime, but right here in Louisiana, it's a culture.
So Sunday, dozens of people put their dancing skills into good use and for a good cause.
Zydeco, it's a cajun staple with all the dancing and the music.
"We love zydeco, and we love to dance!," Kay Wright said.
But it's also a way to help fight cancer.
"It gives us a way to give back and still enjoy what we do, support the bands that we do, and the culture that we love," Wright said.
Kay Wright is the co-captain of the 'Dance to Cure Cancer' Relay for Life team. Wright knows the impact cancer can have on the patients and on their families.
"Of my 49 immediate and extended family, 37 have directly had cancer," Wright said.
The same goes for her fellow co-captain Reginald Hamilton.
"So I've lost family members. I've lost friends to cancer," Hamilton said. "I just feel the more we can do to support a cause for a cure, the better off we are because we're losing so many folks to cancer."
Hamilton hopes that this effort won't just bring the Zydeco community together, but everyone.
"Somewhere, everyone has been touched by cancer. It's not just one person or a solitary problem, it's worldwide," Hamilton asserted.
So in order to help find a cure, people went to Whiskey Bar Landing and donated $15 to help go toward the American Cancer Society, while getting to show off some moves.
"We're just going to have a good time and celebrate life," Wright said.
This is their 7th annual 'Dance to Cure Cancer' fundraiser. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
