The husband of a murdered Baton Rouge attorney remains in jail this evening. Greg Harris is spending his third day behind bars after police arrested him for failing to appear in court on domestic abuse charges, stemming from an incident that took place more than a year ago.
It’s been about 14 months since Harris was charged with domestic abuse, but it wasn’t until the day after his wife was murdered that he ended up behind bars.
Chiquita Tate’s body was found early Friday morning. She had been stabbed multiple times in her office. Tom Withers who works just a floor above her says it’s a safe building, and he doesn’t know how someone could’ve gotten inside. “I think the security locks up at 5:30, don’t know what time this happened.”
Police took Tate’s husband into custody the next day. He was arrested for failing to appear on domestic abuse charges. Those charges are from an incident that happened over a year ago. District Attorney Hillar Moore tells NBC this is a terrible loss. “Other lawyers appointed to take care of her case right now are sympathies her and her family.”
Tate was working on a double murder trial that was scheduled to begin Monday. This morning, the defendant was told he had 30 days to find another attorney. Tate’s husband, Harris was given a mandatory 90-day sentence. Authorities say he had a number of warrants out for his arrest. He has not been charged in the murder.
