BAKER, LA (NBC33) — A big issue coming up in this year's legislative session, Common Core, but a lot of people still don't understand it. That's why a Baker mom decided to host informational meetings to get people informed.
Jerrie Williams just moved here to Baker less than a year ago. She's a mom of three. She's a mom of kids with special needs.
"Educators are already struggling with how to properly educate our children that have different abilities, and then you're going to compress that with a rigorous education and a rigorous curriculum?," Jerrie questioned.
The rigorous new set of standards Jerrie's referring to is Common Core.It concerns her and her daughter Rachael too.
"Mainly because I have dyscalculia. It's like the math version of dyslexia," Rachael explained. "People need to realize that there's different people. People with special needs and even normal kids, they learn differently. If they keep up by trying to put us all in the same category, it won't really work out."
So, Jerrie took things into her own hands because of the challenges her daughter has to go through.
"A lot of the teachers, especially here in Baker, they have no clue about Common core. They've gotten watered-down training on it," Jerrie said. "So I have taken upon myself to pick up the torch and make certain that I provide the different information for the teachers."
So she decided to start hosting informational meetings for parents, teachers, and students to teach them about what they don't know. For her first meeting, she called in Kathryn Goppelt.
"I wanted to teach because I knew that when you teach children, you're molding them for the future," Goppelt said.
Goppelt has been a teacher for 30 years.
"Parents and teachers came to me and they said 'please help us to have a tool to communicate with people what Common Core is,'" Goppelt said.
"We need to come together and voice our opinions, like my mom said, because united we stand separated we fall," Rachael said.
Jerrie said she plans on having another meeting in two weeks.
