Jackson, MS — The discovery of what could be as many as 2,000 graves on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center
has officials rethinking planned construction.
The college planned to build a parking garage on the site but tests of the ground revealed the massive cemetery.
has officials rethinking the location parking facilities and other facilities.
Officials believe some were patients from the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago.
The former Mississippi Insane Asylum operated on the site from 1855 to 1935.
None of the gravesites have names and officials say it would cost as much as $3 million to move the graves.
Officials say new plans include building the parking garage on an adjacent site.
