BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC33) — Winter weather is forecast in north Louisiana Monday and Tuesday. However, the cold air and precipitation is not forecast to combine far enough south to impact our area.
The National Weather Service in Shreveport and Jackson have issued "Winter Storm Watches" along a line from Lufkin, Texas to Monroe, Louisiana to north Mississippi. Also, other southern NWS Offices from Alabama to Georgia have done the same, as the system will likely impact a majority of the Deep South.
As a cold front will move into the state on Monday, causing temperatures to plummet, with chances of precipitation increasing. A transition from rainfall to freezing rain and sleet is possible from late Monday evening through early Tuesday morning in north Louisiana and Mississippi. Ice accumulations could measure from 0.25-0.5 inches, especially on elevated surfaces, like trees and power lines.
The freezing line, where the change from rain to a wintry mix occurs, will stay north of Baton Rouge through the entire event. Most models hold highs in the 40s on Tuesday, while morning lows stay above freezing in the mid to upper-30s Wednesday morning.
The addition of warm air a few thousand feet above the ground will also help to ward off any chances of wintry precipitation in south Louisiana. Although, places in southwest Mississippi may see some pockets of freezing rain and sleet mixed into their forecast on Tuesday night. Lows around McComb, Mississippi will fall to near-freezing by Wednesday morning.
Due to the close proximity of the cold air and precipitation chances, this will be a system to monitor tomorrow and Tuesday. The Stormtracker33 Weather Team will continue to update the forecast, and keep you in-the-know, if any big changes occur.
