BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The first Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana Pageant will be hosted in Baton Rouge this Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Baton Rouge Rehabilitation Hospital, 8595 United Plaza Blvd.
The ceremonies begin at 2:00 p.m., and public admission is $5.
Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana, cosponsored by Baton Rouge Rehab Hospital and Delta Home Health, is a part of the Ms. Wheelchair America organization.
The mission of Ms. Wheelchair America is to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and advocate for the more than 54 million Americans living with disabilities.
Unlike traditional beauty pageants, Ms. Wheelchair America is not a contest to select the most attractive individual. It is instead a competition based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities.
The selected representative must be able to communicate both the needs and the accomplishments of her constituency to the general public, the business community and the legislature.
This year’s pageant judges are:
- Dr. Dawn Swanson- PhD Physical Therapist, OLOL Hospital
- Jean Hansen- Rehabilitation Counselor, Louisiana Rehabilitation Services
- Jeanne Burns- News Anchor, WVLA NBC33
- Katherine Klimitas- Artist, Author and owner of KAK ART & DESIGNS, LLC
- State Representative Scott Simon of District 74
The newly elected Ms. Wheelchair Louisiana 2014 will represent our state in Long Beach, California August 2014 as she competes for the national title.
