BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — "We were flying to Helena, Montana to see our son," said one family, but they couldn't even hit the air because they were stuck here, at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport. "We've had early morning cancellations," said airport spokesperson Jim Caldwell. "The Houston United flights, those are now operating but they're all delayed." The weather in the hub cities aren't the only things holding people up. "We're waiting on my parents coming from Houston, Texas," said Toi Harris.
The icy runways and the time it takes to just de-ice a plane are keeping these travelers from the tarmac. "Some of the people just got out. They're on their way now," added Caldwell. Some tiny tourists don't care for the wait. "It was boring!" exclaimed Bryson and Brysee Harris. But for one pair, this delay comes on a special day "Today is our 38th anniversary, It has been a day of sitting here, getting flight news, bad flight news after bad flight news," said husband and wife, Bill and Yvonne Parsons. "Unfortunately, we've picked a day that's once in a blue moon. Snow and rain [have] prevented people from flying out of Baton Rouge."
But these grandparents aren't giving up on seeing their little ones. "We'll just try again tomorrow," they said with a smile. "5:00, and then it went from 10:45 and 11:00 and after that, it just went every hour." But despite the cloudy skies, people we talked to are choosing to look at the bright side.
"We were waiting on my parents for 1:45," added Harris. "We're just praying and believing God that the skies will open up so they can make safe travel." I guess now I'm going to have to be buying dinner for Yvonne now that we're not flying tonight. But it's been a great day. It's been a great day. We've been nice and warm," smiled Bill. Yvonne laughed and said, "Yeah, and I got to spend the day with him too."
Airport administration strongly recommends checking your flight's status continually if you are planning to fly or pick up someone from the airport.
