HAMMOND, LA — The Southeastern Louisiana football program finalized its list of midyear additions on Thursday, when Lion head coach Ron Roberts announced two student-athletes who previously participated at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and will continue their academic and athletic endeavors as members of the Southeastern football program.
The newest Lions are defensive back Derek Raymond (6-1, 175, New Orleans) and wide receiver Chris Briggs (6-5, 214, Franklinton, La.). Raymond, who comes to Hammond from LSU, will have three years remaining to play for the Lions. Briggs, who previously played at Southern Miss, will have one year of eligibility remaining and will sit out the 2014 season before suiting up in the green and gold in 2015.
The latest secondary addition for the Lions is Raymond, who redshirted at LSU in 2012 and did not see action for the Tigers in 2013. ESPNU rated Raymond the state’s No. 35 overall prospect coming out of East Jefferson High School. He also excelled on the track, winning the 4A state title in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Briggs has spent three seasons in Hattiesburg, appearing in 31 games and totaling 26 catches for 368 yards and a touchdown. Prior to enrolling at Southern Miss, Briggs was an All-State performer at Franklinton High School, where he hauled in 54 passes for 867 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Class 4A state champions as a senior. Coming out of FHS, he was rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and a two-star recruit by Scout.com.
The remainder of the Southeastern signing class will be announced on Feb. 5. The Lions Athletics Association will host a signing day bash at University Place from 5-8 p.m. on signing day. Contact the LAA office at (985) 549-5226 for more information on the signing bash.
