BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A downtown bar was shut down after a car smashed into it Wednesday evening.
There's now a large hole in the side of George's Bar on Saint Louis Street.
A little after 6:00 p.m., a car ran a red light and hit another car, sending the second car crashing through the brick wall of the bar.
The driver of that car was taken to the hospital, with what police call moderate injuries.
Nobody was in the part of the bar that the car hit, so nobody else was hurt. But it turned a quiet Wednesday night into a scary one.
Dino Clark, a bartender at George’s, said: "It sounded like a bomb going off, pretty much. Sparks, it got dark, then the wall caved in. So this was quite an amazement."
The driver who caused the accident was ticketed for running the red light.
George's owners say they don't know when they'll be able to re-open. But with Mardi Gras coming up, this is one of their busiest times of the year.
