Baton Rouge (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council will vote on who will serve as a commissioner for the St. George fire protection district on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Some council members believe a few of the old commissioners are using their titles and firehouses to help the St. George incorporation effort. Those council members aren’t too happy about that.
Councilmember John Delgado had this to say: “The big concerns I've had with the current board is they've allowed the St. George fire department property to be used to further the creation of the St. George city, and I don't think it's appropriate to use public buildings for this private purpose. '
BER Parish's fire districts are governed by volunteer commission boards appointed by the metro council.
Supporters of the breakaway city claim they're closing in on their goal of gathering 18K signatures to put the plan up to a vote.
They think that could happen as early as November.
