Baton Rouge (NBC33) — Colorado has done it, and so has Washington. But will Louisiana follow suit and legalize marijuana?
Legal marijuana use in Louisiana might be a possibility, as some lawmakers are thinking about the issue.
State representative Dalton Honore is calling a meeting to debate just that on Tuesday. The Administration of Criminal Justice Committee is bringing the discussion of cannabis to the capital.
Sherman Q. Mack, one of the lawmakers who's part of that committee, said he’s not quite ready to give the green light to the green stuff.
“In the profession I’m in, I see a lot of drug abuse,” said Mac “I'm an attorney, and some people say marijuana is safe, it's not. It's an open door drug. People who are addicted to heroine or cocaine, they will tell you that they started out on marijuana.”
Representative Honore was away at a conference, but he released this quote: “Legislators need to take a serious look at using medical marijuana. Other states have researched and found benefits.” Honore said he doesn’t want Louisiana to be the last.
His colleague, however, begs to differ.
"It's a detriment to our state,” said Mack. “It would be irresponsible of us, and
Colorado is going to look back and say, ‘What have we done?’ I fully expect Louisiana will agree with me."
Scott Burke, a local resident, is not quite one of those people.
“I'm not into drugs are anything like that, but I feel like people should have the freedom to choose, and they should take that money that they're using trying to bust people that are smoking it or trying to catch people dealing it, they should put that into healthcare, or education that we really need money in now with this economy,” said Burke.
Honore also told NBC33 that 65 percent of Louisianans agree with Burke when it comes to legalizing marijuana.
Whether for or against, lawmakers agree that their constituency is their number one concern.
The marijuana meeting will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
