AMITE, LA (NBC33) — Prosecutors from the LA Attorney General’s Office report that Kentwood Police Chief, Gregory Newton, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one felony count of malfeasance for his connection to missing evidence involving $2,000 in cash.
In April 2012, approximately $11,000 was stolen from a Kentwood home. Mississippi authorities recovered the money and returned it Newton.
When the money was to be returned to the victim, the amount was short by more than $2,000.
In December 2012, LA State Police investigated the complaint of missing cash.
Newton was the sole guardian of the cash, and he pleaded guilty to tampering with the evidence.
Newton received a five-year suspended sentence, five years of probation, and a fine of $2,500 plus court costs. He was also required to immediately resign from his position as police chief.
