GONZALES, LA ( NBC33) — The Gonzales Police Department arrested Barney Powell Bynum Jr., 33, of New Orleans, for several robberies that occurred in Gonzales over a ten week period.
Officers were able to use video surveillance from a neighboring business in one of the robberies to help them get a description of the vehicle.
Detectives also noted a unique piece of clothing, a Toronto Blue Jays’ batting practice hat, which was worn by the suspect.
A search of Bynum’s vehicle resulted in the discovery of the hat along with the weapon used in the robberies.
Detectives also had a clear description of the suspect, which helped them establish that the suspected acted alone in each robbery.
In subsequent interviews, Bynum confessed to all six Gonzales robberies and one robbery committed in another jurisdiction.
Bynum explained to investigators that the motive for the robberies was to supply his $200.00 a day heroin addiction.
Bynum has some family connections to Gonzales but doesn’t live here.
Bynum was arrested and booked six counts of first degree robbery along with a fugitive warrant from New Orleans for Armed Robbery.
Robbery charges are pending out of Baton Rouge for Bynum’s connection to a January 4, 2014 robbery of Subway. He is currently being held at the Ascension Parish Prison.
