BATON ROUGE, La (WVLA) --The Baker School Board has named an interim superintendent.
Iris Walker is filling in until the board finds a permanent replacement.
Walker was previously responsible for elementary education in the district.
The announcement comes after the board received notice from former superintendent Dr. Estes Taplin late last night that he was not going to sign a new contract.
Taplin cited a reduction in salary and benefits, but board members say his raise was tied to performance.
"Those things were put in his contract and once he met those goals, he would get x amount of dollars, we thought that was fair," said board member Pam Malveaux.
Some board members called Taplin's rejection a political ploy.
All five seats on the Baker school board are up for re-election tomorrow.
