NEW ORLEANS,LA (NBC33) — For some Saints fans in New Orleans Drew Brees and the rest of the Saints are more than football players. They are family.
"I grew up with the Saints. I've always been a Saints fan. They're just like my second family," Haley Alvarado, N.O. Saints fan, said.
"We've been raised to just cheer for the Saints whether we're wearing a bag on or head or just like yeah Who Dat," Jojjo Wight, N.O. Saints fan, stated.
Fans said the Saints have a strong emotional connection with the fans and the community they represent.
"The Saints are very important to the psyche of the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. Sports brings out passionate feelings and emotions. It gives something we can all rally around," Mark Romig, President and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. and stadium announcer for the N.O. Saints in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, said.
Fans explained the way the Saints play can affect the mood in the city for the rest of the week.
"If they do lose the whole city does bad for the rest of the week. If they do really good everyone is happy and just cheerful," Alvarado described.
"It means a lot to the city. I mean everybody roots for them. Every time we get a win it just so much for everybody down here," Wight said. "With the Saints on a roll it lifts up the spirit of the city so much. "
Romig said when the Saints play it big games, the city of New Orleans gets put into the spotlight. Romig said that helps Louisiana businesses.
"You have people hearing the name. There will be discussions by the announcers about the city and it's people, and the great food and music," Romig said. "...and that's very positive. "
Saints fans say they will support their boys in black and gold no matter what happens on the field.
"The Saints no matter what, they are winners in all of our hearts. They have brought so much spirit and joy and togetherness to our state. They are winners everyday no matter what happens," Romig said.
The Saints beat the Eagles Saturday night.
