BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — 2014 is almost here, and people here in Baton Rouge are getting ready by stock up on their New Year's supplies including the food they need to start the new year off right.
"I came to grab some jalapenos to grill for tonight, and grab my new years black eyed peas and cabbage while I was at it," Amanda Harris, shopper at Fresh Pickens, said.
The combo of cabbage and black eyed peas in a meal isn't always a crowd pleaser.
"My husband hates it," Harris said. "It's the only time of the year I can get him to eat it."
Harris said it's a New Year's tradition she doesn't mind.
"I finally looked it up and thought why do I always eat cabbage and black eyed peas," Harris stated. "The cabbage is for wealth and prosperity and the black eyed peas are for good luck and happiness. Everybody could use that so that's why I keep doing that."
Other shoppers said they'd celebrate their New Year's with something a little more sugary.
"I'm from India actually. In India for New Year what we celebrate we go to each other's place and wish them the good wishes for the next year and we eat a lot of sweets. They offer us sweets we offer them sweets we eat a lot of sweets," Kishor Prmar, shopper said.
The festive food is only part of the New Year's plan. These shoppers say they've already come up with their New Year's resolutions for 2014.
"Really concentrate on simplifying our lives, simplifying our household, simplifying our obligations," Harris said. "Just trying to live a simpler life."
"Planning to retire and settle my life in better way," Prmar said.
