BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Fireworks--from gunpowder to glow.
"I really like the colors and how they spark," said Julia Schneider. "Fireworks are fun," added Manager at Louisiana Fireworks in Port Allen, John Miketa.
But what happens if it all goes wrong? "You could have an issue," he said. So we stopped by one local fireworks store to see how play it safe. "Avoid drinking alcohol at all costs while shooting fireworks, have water around just in case, read the labels, have good clearance," said Miketa. Make sure you do not shoot fireworks on the grass either. Uneven surfaces may cause the fuse to tip over and catch fire.
And holding those Roman candles in your hand? experts say don't do it. "Never put your head over the firework and gently get away and enjoy the show" Hundreds of people have to go to the emergency room on New Year's due to fireworks injuries. Something this grandmother says she wants to avoid. Sandra Stone said, "We don't allow the children to light any, depending on what they're age is, we don't let them light anything without us being there. We want to make sure they have fun, but are safe too."
Be mindful of pets, as the sound can make them run away. Don't forget to double check your bag before boarding that plane, as you can serve up to 5 years in jail for bringing fireworks on board.
But before bringing in the new year with a bang, remember a rule of thumb
"Use common sense. They're a tradition all over the country as our freedom, so enjoy them and do them the right way."
