BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — What if you wanted to gain work skills, but college is just not for you or your budget? Baton Rouge Community College wants to help with its new scholarship program.
Capital One presented nearly $40,000 to BRCC to help provide career training to those in need Thursday.
Robert Neff knows the meaning of work. He's worked since he graduated high school.
"Work, work, work, not being able to take the time to invest in my future and to get the training I need to have a career," Neff said. "Now is the time to set forth the foundation to have a career so I can provide for myself and my family."
Now, Robert wants the opportunity to hone his skills. So he's decided to apply for Baton Rouge Community College's new scholarship program.
"I really appreciate BRCC and Capital One for spending the time and having the patience to give this kind of opportunity, which our economy really lacks people that want to give chances to people who may not be able to afford it," Neff said.
His cousin, A.J. Selders, feels the same.
"I've had a lot of doors slammed in my face and usually people of this caliber look down upon the little guy. When a lot of people don't realize that the 'little guy' makes the world tick. We build the buildings. We build the structures. We form the property," Selders said. "It's nice that people actually see that and give us respect and pay us that respect to actually help us out."
The BRIDGE program's goal is to prepare people with the skills they need for jobs, but not just any jobs.
"We are responding to the trade of industry trades crafts people. So what we will do is we will have 20 piping scholarships, and we will have 15 welding scholarships. We want to make sure they have the skills for all the craft positions that are coming to the state of Louisiana," Katreena Moses, Coordinator of the BRIDGE Program, said.
Applicants must meet low-income requirements. Interested applicants can call (225) 216-8280 or email email@example.com . Applications can also be picked up at BRCC's Business Training Center, 350 N. Donmoor in Baton Rouge. The program is scheduled to being January 27th.
