BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — One man is dead and another is hospitalized tonight after a shooting on Ridge Pecan early this morning.
"Pop, pop, pop, pop!"
That's the sound Randi Fischer woke up to this morning.
"I heard yelling coming from the apartment across from me, and then I heard gunshots," Fischer said.
By the time deputies got called to the 9000 block of Ridge Pecan Drive, they found one man dead and another hurt.
"I did hear him yelling for help. He just kept on saying, 'Help, help, I've been shot! I'm going to die. Help!'" Fischer exclaimed.
Fischer's lived in the neighborhood for two years, but after the shooting, she's thinking about moving.
"Right now, I'm just hoping everything will be fine," Fischer said. "It's been pretty much quiet except for the random thefts. This is the first time ever there was an actually homicide, so close to home, but I'm not going to lie. I knew it was going to happen one day."
Her neighbor, Kathleen Abernathy, agrees.
"So, I expected something to happen, but I didn't expect something like this to happen," Abernathy said. "It's too close to home, and I thank God it wasn't me. It could have been me."
Abernathy said she's reported suspicious activity in her neighborhood before, but now that something like this has happened, she hopes things change.
"For them to step up the patrol a lot through here because I have called repeatedly for the past three months about smelling marijuana and stuff coming from that particular apartment," Abernathy said.
The shooting is still under investigation. We'll keep you updated on an any new developments.
