HAMMOND, La (NBC33) — Southeastern Louisiana University Lions football fans are ready for the big game this weekend at Strawberry Stadium. The Lions take on Sam Houston State Bearkats for the Lions first playoff game in Strawberry Stadium. Fans say it's a game they're ready to roar for.
"I feel our student section is one of the loudest in the Southland. We're going to root our team on the whole time," Brandon Nettles, Southeastern student and football fan, said. "From the time the game starts to the end of the fourth quarter. If it goes into over time I feel bad for the other team, because we are not going to get off your back the whole time. "
"It's huge it's a break though really get into the fcs playoffs getting our name out there nationally," Ron Roberts, Southeastern Head Football Coach, said. "That's what we want to be known for we want to be a power in fcs football."
The mission for fans is simple: come out in big numbers for the game.
"We plan on packing the berry and making it a big out come for the students and fans who all support Southeastern," Fredrick Minor, Southeastern student, said.
Coach Ron Roberts says the fans support this year has helped the team's spirit on the field, and he hopes fans will continue to "lion up."
"The the same they've been doing. They just keep "lioning" up they've done their part. they've been a great asset. They've helped us get to this point. I know our players really appreciate it. I really appreciate it. We're in this thing together," Roberts said.
Fans say they're ready to "lion up."
"Lion up is this. It's just showing you that we are going to turn it up on the football field. We're going to turn it up in academics. We're going to turn it up as a school because it's lion nation," Nettles exclaimed.
The lion love.stretched far beyond campus to the streets of downtown Hammond.
Hammond businesses could see a big boost in sales thanks to the big game.
Until the game fans had these words for the football team.
"Don't never change up anything. It's time for you to lion up and be the best team in Louisiana. Lion up," Nettles said.
Southeastern officials say if you do plan on coming out to campus Saturday get there early. If you want to park in the lots close to the stadium you will have to pay.
