PRAIRIEVILLE, LA — An 18 year old boy is dead after a two vehicle crash in Gonzales.
Lousiana State Police: Shortly before 8:30 pm on November 22, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash involving the passenger of a pickup truck that occurred on US Hwy 61 at Duplessis Rd. in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 18 year old Gonzales resident Eric W. Martin.
Martin was one of four passengers in the bed of 55 year old Gerard Cahill’s pickup at the time. Cahill went to turn right on US Hwy 61 when Martin fell out. The other driver, Brian Guillot was unable to avoid hitting martin.
Both Cahill and Guillot were wearing seatbelts and left uninjured. The two drivers were not cited because impairment was not suspected during the crash.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Riders over the age of 12 may legally ride in the bed of a pickup truck; however, no one may ride in the back of a pickup truck on the Interstate. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
