BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Members of the state's Tuition Task Force received a report regarding the TOPS scholarship program.
Key points in the report looked at increasing standards for students to receive TOPS scholarships, as well as funding education across the board.
Over the past several years there have been significant budget cuts to higher education, and while tuition in Louisiana remains relatively low, leaders say the state needs to have core funding which included investing in education.
"One of the more important things that we took from today is the need for us to look at higher education as a state more as an investment and less as an expense, stated task force member Dr. Phillip Rozeman. “We look at the issue of having core predictable funding so that these colleges and universities are able to thrive in the future economy."
A final report from the Tuition Task Force will be submitted to the state legislature by January 9.
