BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office has arrested Sandra Henderson, 58, W. Grant St., Baton Rouge after she allegedly choked a 7-year-old student aboard her school bus.
According to a report, deputies were contacted on November 6th around 3:30 pm in reference to an incident that occurred on a school bus. The complainant stated that her 7-year-old son was choked by his bus driver that morning on the way to school.
Deputies spoke with the victim, while in the presence of his mother, who told them that the bus driver thought he and his brother were fighting. The boy stated that the bus driver, Henderson, then grabbed him around the neck with both hands and choked him. He said she also pinned him down in the seat using her knee.
Investigators contacted the Highland Elementary Dean of Students who investigated the incident that day. The Dean told investigators that several students on the bus witnessed Henderson choke the victim.
On Tuesday, November 11th, investigators met with the transportation supervisor and reviewed the surveillance video from Henderson’s bus on the morning of the alleged incident. The video showed Henderson walk to the rear of the bus while some type of disturbance was taking place. The victim was taking off his backpack and standing in the aisle when Henderson walked past him. Henderson then grabbed the victim by the arm with one hand at which time it appeared the victim pulled away. Henderson then grabbed the victim from behind around the neck and shoulder area using two hands and tried to forcefully put the victim into his seat, still with both hands around the his neck. It appeared the victim was trying to struggle while Henderson was holding him around the upper part of his body. Henderson got in the seat with the boy and was using her body to restrain him.
Investigators contacted Henderson to speak with her about the incident. After reviewing the video with investigators, Henderson explained that there was a fight at the back of the bus. She stated she then observed the victim standing over his brother who was crying. Henderson stated that is when she grabbed the victim in an attempt to stop him from fighting. She went on to say that when she grabbed him, the victim swung at her at which time she placed her hands across the victim folding both his arms across her body to stop him from fighting her. She stated the victim continued to fight and kick at her and she attempted to restrain him.
Henderson was taken into custody and charged with a single count of Cruelty to a Juvenile.
She was transported to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where she is being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
