JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Louisiana State Police investigated a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on US 90B near Westwood Drive yesterday evening, shortly after 9:00 PM. The bicyclist was pronounced dead after being transported to the West Jefferson Medical Center.
Corey McCall, 44, of Marrero, was traveling on US 90B when he swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the bicyclist. McCall lost control of his vehicle and struck the bicyclist in the center lane then ran off the road to the right and struck a stop sign. McCall submitted to a breath test and no detectable alcohol was found in his system.
Impairment is suspected on the part of the bicyclist and toxicology results are pending an autopsy. Troopers suspect speed may be a factor on the part of McCall. The crash remains under investigation. Identification of the bicyclist is pending the notification of next of kin.
According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws, including crossing streets at crosswalks and only when permitted. Bicycles must also have a lamp mounted on the front that shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front. They shall also have a lamp mounted on the rear that will emit either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear.
