BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in Louisiana. To commemorate November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month and spread awareness about this disease that affects too many of our neighbors, Cancer Services is hosting two events in partnership with the Lung Cancer Alliance and Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Both held the week of November 11th, they include a Lung Cancer Survivorship Luncheon and a special Lung Cancer Vigil.
Hosted at Cancer Services the evening of Wednesday, November 13th at 6 p.m., the annual Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil honors and remembers those affected by lung cancer while spreading awareness for the disease. The program includes keynote speaker Reverend Maxine Millender the Chaplain at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, livemusic by Taylor Frey and a candle lighting ceremony. Gabby Grier of the Lung Cancer Alliance will also give a word of inspiration, representing the national organization dedicated to providing support and advocacy for people living with or at risk for the disease. The event is open to the community and is Baton Rouge’s largest awareness event for lung cancer.
The Lung Cancer Survivorship Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 15th at noon at Cancer Services. A special meeting of the monthly Lung Cancer Support Group, this event commemorates and celebrates each individual’s cancer journey and provides an opportunity to meet others who can truly empathize with their situation. A light lunch will be served and lung cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers are invited. Please RSVP to Lindsay Wilson at Cancer Services at 225-927-2273 or email@example.com .
