BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — New recommendations out this week for any student-athlete with a concussion - doctors say staying off the field may not be enough.
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending students stay home from school.
There's no way to tell how long it will take someone to recover from a concussion, so even if their headaches go away, they may still have trouble concentrating, and they could get dizzy.
Local doctors say the time off is a good idea.
"The idea is that whatever's causing the symptoms to be there, you take 'em away. You give the brain time to heal,” stated neurologist Dr. Glenn Kidder, “so I think that it is certainly reasonable in some cases to do that."
Kidder said there aren't many completed studies about concussions, so we'll learn a lot more about how to treat them and prevent them in the next few years.
