BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The federal government is issuing a new warning about tainted jerky treats that are making pets sick.
Thousands of pets have already gotten sick from this and almost 600 have died.
At this point, researchers haven't figured out what's causing the problem.
Now, the FDA is looking into it. So far, a reported 3,600 dogs and even ten cats have been affected.
Local veterinarians say avoiding jerky treats altogether is best if you want to keep your pet safe.
“Apparently most of them are made in China, and vomiting and diarrhea a common clinical sign for many different diseases,” stated Dr. Erica Breedan. “You might not think anything of it the first time they do that, but it can lead to severe GI Disease and Kidney Failure."
Some of the symptoms include stomach issues and a decrease in appetite. If your pet does get sick from a treat, experts say save the packaging and report it to the FDA.
