ASCENSION PARISH SHERIFF'S OFFICE — The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office made 75 arrests in conjunction with a large underage drinking party over the weekend.
On October 19, deputies responded to a home in the 6100 block of Dolly’s Lane in Sorrento due to a call from a parent regarding a party with reported underage drinking; the parent’s 15-year-old daughter was at the party and called her parents to pick her up because of the widespread underage alcohol consumption.
Deputies saw approximately 40 vehicles parked outside of the residence with empty beer cans lying on the ground.
Before deputies could secure the scene, several teenagers began to run into the wooded area near the residence.
The owners of the residence, who were out of town, were notified. The teenagers ranged from 15-18 years of age.
Deputies observed a large amount of alcoholic beverages located in the garage and inside of the residence.
Deputies issued summons to eight 18-year-olds for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile. Deputies also issued summons to twenty-eight 17-year-olds for Possession of Alcohol by a Person Under the Age of 18. Thirty-nine juveniles were arrested and charged with Possession of Alcohol by a Person Under the Age of 18 . The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents or guardians.
Deputies arrested the juveniles due to an Ascension Parish ordinance that took effect in May 2013. The ordinance prevents minors from being in possession of alcohol on private property unless they are in the presence of a legal guardian, parent, grandparent or “someone over 30 years of age with whom the underage person has established a significant relationship by blood, adoption or infirmity.”
