ORIGINAL: An early morning crash has resulted in the closure of I-10 Eastbound.
On October 16, at 3:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a crash on I-10 Eastbound in Jefferson Davis Parish about 45 miles east of the Texas state line that resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes.
The crash occurred when, for unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler driven by Aldo R. Gonzalez, 27, of Humble, TX drove into the rear of another 18-wheeler driven by Huriberto Almendarez Garcia, 33, of Mexico on I-10 Eastbound in the right lane near U.S. 165 just east of Iowa.
Gonzalez was extricated from his truck and transported to an area hospital with moderate injuries. A passenger in the truck Gonzalez was driving was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and released. Garcia was not injured.
Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers. Gonzalez was cited for following too close and the crash remains under invesigation.
The crash resulted in engine parts that were being transported by one of the trucks to be spread out across the highway. Paint/paint products are leaking from the other truck. In addition, diesel used to fuel one of the trucks leaked onto the highway. Officials with Louisiana State Police Troop D, Louisiana State Police Haz-Mat, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development are working together to reopen both lanes as soon as possible.
