NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A drunk driver is to blame for a crash that shut down the Bonnet Carre Spillway for nearly half a day.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the crash happened on I-10 at roughly 3:10 a.m. We’re told the impaired driver went the wrong way down the Interstate, causing two crashes.
Officials say the driver of the SUV narrowly escaped being hit by an 18-wheeler. However, that caused the truck swerve and flip on its side, causing it to catch fire.
After that crash, the SUV continued going the wrong way down the Interstate and eventually hit another 18-wheeler head-on.
It took several hours to remove the debris, which forced the closure of the Interstate. It was partially reopened at 10:30 a.m., but did not fully open until 2:30 p.m.
We’re told there were only minor injuries reported.
The driver of the SUV was arrested and charged with DWI, Reckless Operation, and Driving the Wrong Way on a One Way Road. Officials have not released the name of the suspect.
